It's the fourth PETALS Snapshot of Spring 2024, and today I'm going to be talking about the L in PETALS, which is Learning.

So yesterday I went down to London for some internal training around objective setting and setting, constructive and measurable, all those typical smart objectives that we all know and love and maybe don't.

For me, it was a good opportunity to realign on what was expected as a manager in my current role, looking after and coaching training and growing the engineers around me and the people around me, because there are people I work with that aren't necessarily direct reports, but they are part of the teams that I work with.

So it was a good opportunity to really reset my expectations on what a good objective could look like.
We went through some exercises to use the models and the frameworks that were provided.
I did it on one of my own objectives that I want to play for this year as well.
So it was a nice idea to just kind of brain dump your ideas, go through these systematic questions, and then rephrase the whole thing as a nice and clear objective with being timely, measurable and all the other stretch goals that go beyond.

The other nice topic that we touched on very briefly was the idea of having moonshot objectives.
So not only what would be a good outcome from your objective, but what would be amazing.
So, you know, what would be that ultimate goal that you want to aim for? Doesn't mean you'll get there, but by aiming high, you're more likely to achieve a really good result in the process.
Something to think about if you are setting objectives at any point in the year, in your career, or however you do this, think about what makes a good objective and what makes a stretch moonshot objective.

I'll be back again tomorrow with another Snapshot talking about PETALS.
