Why measure productivity? 🚀

Why do we measure productivity with PETALS? In this Snapshot, Si talks about the importance of subjectively measuring productivity as opposed to using other standard metrics often referred to in software delivery.

This is the second PETALS Snapshot of the Spring 2024 season as we ramp up to onboard the new users.
So what I'm going to do today is talk about productivity.
Now, what does productivity actually mean?
In software engineering, we typically measure work items completed or how long work items take, and that's the typical metric that we look at from a productivity perspective.
However, does that make you feel productive?
This is why productivity is an important factor as part of PETALS.
As a line manager, I often feel productive, even though I'm not necessarily delivering much as an individual contributor. But having lots of meetings, getting stuff done, finishing things off is not always the way to complete and measure a metric, and finishing things off is often the final point, but doesn't necessarily have been productive on that day.
So this is why I feel like measuring productivity subjectively is a really useful factor as part of the PETALS framework.
So yesterday I felt really productive.
I managed to create some content, I've got some stuff out there, I've got some feedback, I've got all the endorphins from actually completing that piece of work as well.
Now, the metrics might not suggest it was worth it, but for me, I felt productive.
So tomorrow I'll probably talk about another PETALS factor. I'll see how I feel at the end of the day today, and I'll talk about that tomorrow.
Tune in then and I'll tell you more about.
