Behavioural or technical growth 🌱

Today, I talk about career changers, domain experts and how they compare with development plans.

Transcript

This is the 9th petals snapshot of spring 2024 and today I'm going to be talking a bit more about learning. So recently I've been going through a lot of mid year review conversations with what we call how's it going? Conversations which we do twice a year. Because I'm quite new to the role. I'm still getting to know everyone individually and personally and never done their format before. It's a great chance to kind of reflect on what their objectives are, what they're kind of going to do next, and think about what they've actually contributed and learned over the last sort of six to three months. Obviously, everyone's different. Everyone's got different trajectories, different paces. What I've really found quite interesting is I'm working with a couple of people who are career changers and I'm working with people that have been in the role for 1520 years at points as well. It might not be in the same company, but they've been doing their job for a long time. One thing that has really struck me is the difference between behavioural and technical skills as well. Those that have come into their career from a different industry for after 1520 years have got some fantastic behavioural skills. Some call it soft skills are not following that language, whereas those that have been in their role for 1520 years have not changed. They're very technically strong, but what they might have neglected are the more behavioral parts as well. So they've got to that point to their career where they can start being more of a mentor or a trainer or a manager or some of those other areas which do require a lot more behavioral soft skills. It's something to think about when you are reflecting on like what do you want to learn next? Do you feel like you're an expert in your domain and you need to push yourself into a different world? Is it going to be a different technical challenge? Is it a different behavioral challenge? Think about it that way instead, rather than what do I constantly need to learn in the day job? That's it for today. I'll be back tomorrow with another petal snapshot on a completely different topic. Probably.

Do you need to grow technically or behaviourally?

They aren't mutually exclusive but, depending on your career tenure or your own skills, it's worth considering some different angles on what to learn next.
