Does this need to be a meeting? 📅

Have you ever wondered whether a meeting was necessary? And maybe what you could be doing with that time?

Transcript

Today I'm going to be talking about meetings, ironically in a meeting room. I'm in the office today, so I thought I'd get a quick recording in before the day starts. Yesterday was interesting, though, mainly around productivity. The P in petals. So we have like a fortnightly checkpoint with some major initiatives that are going across the engineering world, mostly around community efforts and stuff like that. The meeting tends to get into very much of a status update and I think we've realised there's not much value in having an hour long meeting, especially in protected focus time lunchtime. So the proposal was we can the current format as it is set up as a monthly discussion point. And then we've also got some spin off, like Nisha community groups already doing the fortnightly updates as well. Plus we've now got a Jira board just to track progress on all the things that are going on. So this makes the conversation more natural, more timely and picking up actions as they're more relevant. If we've got now on the Jira board, we can just see where things are at. We don't need to ask and just make sure. Maybe things are on track, or if we need to reprioritize brilliantly because we made that decision early on in the meeting, that hour long meeting, he'd give me back half an hour so I could go off and actually make some changes and follow up on the actions that I had allocated to myself. So it's one of those questions, do you need this to be a meeting or could you even cancel it or rearrange as we did? One to think about and I'll be back again tomorrow with another petals snapshot.

Let's think about maximising #productivity on some questionable meetings.
