Weekly 13 - Spring time goals and real growth

Spring is here, and so is a little milestone β PETALS has been featured in the new book Real World Agility by Nick Brown! πΈ
Transcript
So Petals just got published. Not the whole app, nearly there, but we are actually featured in a real world book called Real World Agility by Nick Brown. Let's take a moment to celebrate and see what's coming next. This is the 13th petals weekly. Unlucky for some, but actually not too bad for us. Before we get into all the weeds, let's do those good old scores. Productivity is 2, enjoyment 4, teamwork 4, learning is 4 and serenity 4. All the fours brings out the average of 3.6. Productivity did take a bit of a hit. Enjoyment has gone up a little bit though, because of all the good stuff that's going on. But teamwork and learning has been on the rise as well. So what's been going on with the product development? We are just tipping into Q2 now officially, and we are not on track, unfortunately, but we have got a bit more clarity around what that actually means now. Had a really good dev time with the engineers on Friday. We caught up, had a look at what's been working. Actually it was quite nice to look back at all the design work I've been doing over the last few weeks with the gang and sort of go, what's, what's working and what isn't. We've identified a few little challenges and missing criteria, so made a note and put it on the backlog. There's a lot of stuff that's still in flight that just needs kind of merging into the master build and push into our dev environment. So a lot of kind of tidying up and merging and reviews in the background. Just checking code quality as well. So we're getting there. My next round of focus will be around the team detail view and the homepage as well. So I'm going to pick one a week just so it gives me a bit more flex. And then the other guys have got some other work to do as well. We've got to tidy up some of the build pipelines. Some additional logic that's not necessarily built in yet. We're nearly there. We are on the final push and I think by the next review we should be able to have something we can demo. It's also worth thinking we're going into Q2. I want to have a bit more of a plan around Q2. The high level goal was we launch this and then we start looking at the paid premium model. Now, we don't know what that looks like yet. We've got some ideas, so I will be getting my head down into that from next week, I think, just to work out what that looks like. So as I alluded to in the teaser at the start, Petals has been published for the first time. My old friend Nick Brown referenced Petals in his book Real World Agility. He's got two foot three pages about Petals how it all works. So as you can see, uses the flower analogies and it gives you some real world examples how it worked with some of the teams he's worked with as well. It's a nice little case study to demonstrate what can be done with Petals, but it also gives me a little bit of affirmation that this actually works. So to get this printed and not just a blog post or a video, it gives me a bit more confidence that we're doing the right thing. And this week I've also decided to invest in my future a bit more. I've been working on a classic old Intel MacBook Pro, a 2019 model, for the best part of the last five years. It served me well, it's still chugging along, it's doing a good job, but it is struggling under the strain with some of the stuff I do, especially when it comes to content creation like this. So I've invested in a new M4 MacBook Air. It's got 16 gig memory and 512 storage, which is about right for what I need. I need something with some decent storage locally for the content I make, but because I have a lot of cloud storage in place as well, I don't need it all locally. And 16 gig seems to be about the sweet spot for video production. I think any more than that, it's just a bit excessive. But you know, just to think about, well, I need a new kit and I need something that will last me. So this week I will be setting that up, making sure I've got all the right tools available. Descript is already on there, as you can probably tell, and I'll be getting all the rigs set up as well so I can make sure that everything works properly. I'm not quite happy with these angles this week, but we'll get there. But I am trying to give myself a bit more of a goal around this so you know, if I can pay off this Mac by the end of the year with a product, happy days. It's a nice way to make sure that I'm demonstrating value and using all these tools to my advantage as well. From a learning perspective. This week I was listening to A Year of Creativity by Katherine Jacob and Sue Unerman. This reminded me of some stuff I've read recently over the past few months and back to some workshops I've been in with an old friend called Rachel Shilcock around the natural cycles of our planet and our bodies and how that all fits into our productivity and our working habits. It's a nice way to realize how our creativity aligns with the natural seasons that we are all subjected to. Now we're going into spring officially. Summertime changed over last yesterday. We are feeling a little bit more optimistic. We're feeling the heat and the energy. We're feeling the good stuff, right? And I want to make sure that I'm using that as a kind of motivation for what I'm doing with everything, Petals as well, and all my side projects, not just petals, and in my workday as well. So have a think about this when you're with your teams. What is going to be your spring goal for this year? How could you use that energy, that newfound energy and enthusiasm from the brighter days and all that good stuff and how you can align your projects and all goals towards that as well? To get me thinking, though, the traditional three month quarters don't necessarily align with the natural seasons we're familiar with. So we know January to March is Q1, but really spring starts in March and it goes through to May. Then summer is June to August. So I'm trying to work out how that fits. I'm got no answers yet, but it has got me thinking. If I could align to the natural cycles that we're more attuned to, I might offset some of my goals for petals to make sure it aligns better. So bear with me while I work through that one. But also let me know if you've got any ideas on how this has worked for you. Finally, we are starting to look ahead into the rest of the year as well. We are going into Q2. We're going to try and launch this, get the marketing behind it a bit more, refine the marketing website and then we can go for a big push in Q3. I've started planning a workshop in June for Milton Keynes. I'm working with the Agile MK meetup to work out how that will look and what that content might look like. I want to make it interactive, not necessarily just a presentation as I've done before. So it's very early days. We've pencilled in the dates now at least, and I'm thinking about how we can make it more of a conversation, maybe get everyone thinking about how their teams work together and it may be as leadership. Generally these audiences are what their observations are as well very early days. I'll share more details when I can and I'm definitely open to suggestions on how we can make this work. So there we have it. That is the 13th petals weekly. Hopefully you got something out of it. I'm feeling good about myself right now and I'm definitely feeling Quite optimistic for Q2 spring whichever I call it. Big shout out to Nick Brown for publishing Real World Agility. Thank you ever so much for doing that mate and can't wait to read the rest of what's going on in that book. Make sure you let me know what your scores are this week or this fortnight. Give us love and subscribe and all the social channels we're on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, all the popular ones and hit reply if you are curious. I want to know a bit more about what's going on behind the scenes. Take care of yourselves and each other and keep looking after that team health of yours.
